Open Letter To Hiring Managers Hi candidate here. Thanks for the opportunity to apply to a job at your company. And thanks for the invitation to interview with you. And thanks for the second invitation to interview with your team.  It was really quite fun much more fun than applying to more jobs and not hearing back at all.  It was fun to talk about my skills, projects, background, experience, and be back in my comfort zone. It was fun to talk to professionals who have jobs and salaries and benefits and feel comfortable with their professional life.  It was fun to talk shop and feel like I could stay up with the conversation, even contribute. I do have something Id like to share with you, though. Some of the questions you asked were clearly based on some unfounded assumptions about me. I addressed those questions but I could tell from your body language that you already had created your own answer for me, and no matter what my answer was, you had already made judgement about me that I wasnt going to be able to get around. The whole process started to feel fake.  Why did you even bring me in? Why let me get this far? The icing on the cake was the generic, soulless, impersonal weve decided to go with someone else. Well keep your resume in our file rejection letter. All the smiles, the warmth, the personal touch, and then BAM! Did I become the enemy?  Why go from personal and happy-to-see-me to Ciao Prisoner two-four-six-oh-one!? I thought that perhaps we could have had a friendly, professional relationship. No, not BFFs. Im not going to harass you, ask you to lunch too often, or even email you much. But if we met up at a networking meeting, I would come say hi and see how things are going. If I heard of something that would benefit you, I would want to share it with you. But that last goodbye showed me that really, I was just a number to you. None of the smiley stuff meant anything. You stopped caring about me, even though I was good enough to make it through a few interviews, once you picked one person (who will probably not be on your team in two years). Oh well. I guess thats the game. Pretend we are great buddies during this interview process, but if it doesnt work out, then theres an uncomfortable silent agreement between you and I that no, Im not allowed to communicate with you. I certainly cant ask you for feedback, which you wont give.  I have to figure out that I, as a professional, just have to suck it up, pretend it never happened, and put on my best smile for the next interview. Fake, yes, but thats the game. These are the rules you set up. And it sucks to be on this side. I hope that when (not if) you are on this side you can see how stupid the rules are, and next time you are hiring, you can be humane and treat your candidates with dignity, even if you dont choose to hire them. The Magic Button

The Magic Button Have you ever wished that there were a magic button you could push to get through to someone? You’d be in the middle of a difficult and frustrating conversation, where nothing was clicking, and suddenly, with one touch, your message would come across and you can hear and be heard. That button might be closer than you think. There are two essential communication skills that will help you connect with coworkers, potential employers, and even strangers.   These skills will shorten conflicts and may even prevent them.  According to Dr. Rick Brinkman and Dr. Rick Kirschner, authors of Dealing with People You Can’t Stand, conflict occurs when we focus on our differences instead of what we have in common. Their book is focused on how to connect and work with someone who thinks very differently from you.   Drs. Rick and Rick write that you must first blend with someone â€" convince them that you are like them â€" before you can redirect their thoughts or actions. Blending can be a verbal or non-verbal process. You blend verbally by finding things you have in common: liking the same foods or movies, attending the same church or school, or having acquaintances in common. You also blend when you ask someone for their opinion (“I’m thinking that I’m in the mood for a cheeseburger; what about you?”) or validate what they’re feeling (“I agree â€" it’s freezing in here!”) These examples sound trivial, but they have a measurable impact on your relationships. Non-verbal blending signals can be equally powerful. When someone is expressing pain, joy, surprise, or any strong emotion, we often mirror their expression. When we want to connect with a young child, we kneel down to put ourselves at their level. When someone’s posture indicates that they’re energized or tense, we mirror their body language. Mirroring is an ancient instinct, and one that indicates that you’re empathetic and connected to the other person. It’s essential in the healthy development of babies and young children, and I would argue that it’s essential to all healthy relationships. Drs. Rick and Rick write “…there is no middle ground. Consciously or consciously, people want to know ‘are you with me or not?’ You come across as being on common ground or worlds apart.” What that tells me is that you may think you’re being neutral, but you’re almost never perceived as being so.   You’re either being warm and supportive, or you’re against me.   Boy, does that explain a lot of the misunderstandings from my work life. The next step is redirection â€" getting a difficult person (someone who is in conflict with you) off their unproductive rant and on to a more productive course. The idea is to defuse their anger so you can really discuss the issue and come to a solution. Drs. Rick and Rick say that the first step in redirection is tactful interruption. Break into the rant with polite repetition (be patient; it may take a while.) “Excuse me, Glenda. Excuse me, Glenda. Glenda, please listen for a moment.” Eventually, your polite repetition will wear down the ranter and help her wind down enough to listen. Then it’s your turn. Speak your truth. “From where I stand, this is an issue of process, not intent.” State your perception calmly and quietly. Remind the ranter of your common goal and offer a solution that might work for you both.   It may take some gentle toughness to command her attention long enough to speak. One example in Dealing with People You Can’t Stand was masterful.  A customer service agent at the airport’s lost luggage counter was besieged after a series of flights were changed or cancelled.   One passenger was raging at her as if she had personally decided to lose his luggage and make him miserable.   Despite her best and most skillful attempts to appease him and help him, he continued to berate her. Finally, she quietly set her pen down and looked him right in the eye. When she had his attention, after a long pause, she said, “Sir, there are only two people standing at this counter who could possibly care about the future of your baggage.” She paused to let that sink in. “And frankly, sir, one of them is rapidly losing interest.” He was putty in her hands after that. Youve been writing your to-do list all wrong - Debut To-do lists! Theyre fun, arent they? The very act of making a to-do list turns you into a legitimate adult with real plans and goals. All the world leaders probably have to-do lists. I bet Kanye  has one. And in my eyes, that makes me just as good. Theres nothing like putting a line through something, safe in the knowledge that its no longer taking up any mental space. Its great motivation. But at the same time, a long to-do list can be a major cause of worry. Is there any more terrifying sight than a list of tasks you have to do longer than Hagrids list of regrets? Well, no more. Theres a more effective way of planning what you need to get done which entails only a mild amount of stress. The art of time-blocking Time-blocking offers you all the organisational help of a to-do list with much less of the angst that comes with questioning all your life choices. The average person is awake for sixteen hours a day on average. With a traditional to-do list, all those outstanding tasks stand imposing at the beginning of each day, challenging you to cram it all into a finite space of time. The time-blocking method does things the other way round. The idea is this: instead of giving yourself a number of hours to do a task, give every hour a few designated tasks. How to incorporate time-blocking into your to-do list This is time-blocking in a nutshell: Get yourself (or make yourself) a planner with all your hours in the day on it. In each space of an hour, write down the task, or tasks, that you want to accomplish in the time. For example, from 9am-10am set yourself the task of answering all of your emails. From 10am-12pm, aim to bash out at least three job applications. From 12pm-1pm, eat lunch to keep your energy up, yknow. Youll immediately see where you have unrealistic expectations of yourself. If youre not able to finish those job applications between 10am-12pm, give yourself a bit more time the following day by blocking out 10am-1pm instead. Theres a lot of situations where we think we can get something down in a set amount of time. Thats  the planning fallacy talking. But remember everything takes longer than you think. The time-blocking method helps you visualise that. It also keeps you focused on the task at hand, as you dont start something and then leave it while you do something else. Instead, it forces you to think about what makes the most sense to do in each hour. The bravest organisers among us will use it to organise when to complete certain tasks at the best times. Morning person? Schedule all your tough stuff for before lunch? Cant think when youre hungry? Do all your menial stuff between 12-1. It really is the way forward. Finding Your Place in the Green Economy I bet many of you out there are wearing green today in honor of St. Patricks Day. I decided to do something different this year and blog green instead. Ive been a big fan of Carol McClellands Green Career Central site for over a year and I was thrilled to hear that she recently published a book on the topic of green careers called Green Careers for Dummies. She stopped by the Career Solvers blog to give readers the insider scoop on the green economy. You know you want to contribute to the evolving green economy. You may even know what skills, experience, and interests position you for this kind of work. The question is, do you know how to find a green position that meets your needs?Although the process of finding a position in the green economy is similar to finding a job in the traditional economy, there are some distinct differences that make the process a bit more…interesting, shall we say.1) The green economy is constantly evolving. Given that we are in the earliest phases of a new industrial revolution, we aren’t completely sure what the economy will look like in the future. All signs point to a great deal of potential, but the specifics aren’t laid out yet. The big picture is sketched out in broad brush strokes, but the specific details are out of focus2) To most people there’s a fundamental question that is still unclear. What careers/companies/industries are green? Generally speaking, careers/companies/industries are green when they make a positive impact on the planet. The specific nature of the impact depends on the goal(s) they are striving to achieve, whether it’s reducing greenhouse gases, conserving energy, reducing waste, rethinking water usage, and/or restoring nature. When you look at this from a broad perspective, a wide number of industries are making concerted efforts to take greener, more sustainable actions.If you want a visual look at the array of industries, take a look at the Green Economy Map (www.greencareercentral.com/map) I created after writing Green Careers For Dummies.3) Occupation resources you are accustomed to using to understand a position are probably not available yet. The only way to figure out how your skills fit is to research your target industry and talk with those in the field to understand how the industry works and how your skills fit. Don’t try to nail down an exact job title; there’s no universally agreed up job functions yet. Instead look at what you are known for. Then ask yourself how your skills, knowledge, experience and training can help a green company/industry address the issues it’s facing.You’ll need to do some groundwork online and through conversations before you’ll be able to articulate the role you are best suited to play. In the process your research on the industry and company will prepare you for your interviews with that company or its competitor.4) There’s no common wisdom of the best companies to work for. We don’t yet know which companies will bec ome household names in this new economy. As a result, you don’t know, off the top of your head, which companies will need someone with your skills or which companies are in your area. To develop your list of target companies, read industry specific blogs, notice which companies are listed as members on key professional associations, and pay attention to investment news to discover which start up companies and large, well known companies are active and growing in your target industry.5) Timing is everything. Different industries are developing at different rates. Some industries, such as solar and some areas of the smart grid sector, are reaching a point of maturity where companies are hiring people for all parts of the organization. Other industries are a bit earlier in their growth cycle. They may be in a research and development phase where most of their human resource budget is going toward the scientists and technical people who are creating the product the company will sell.
