Youve been writing your to-do list all wrong - Debut
Youve been writing your to-do list all wrong - Debut To-do lists! Theyre fun, arent they? The very act of making a to-do list turns you into a legitimate adult with real plans and goals. All the world leaders probably have to-do lists. I bet Kanye has one. And in my eyes, that makes me just as good. Theres nothing like putting a line through something, safe in the knowledge that its no longer taking up any mental space. Its great motivation. But at the same time, a long to-do list can be a major cause of worry. Is there any more terrifying sight than a list of tasks you have to do longer than Hagrids list of regrets? Well, no more. Theres a more effective way of planning what you need to get done which entails only a mild amount of stress. The art of time-blocking Time-blocking offers you all the organisational help of a to-do list with much less of the angst that comes with questioning all your life choices. The average person is awake for sixteen hours a day on average. With a traditional to-do list, all those outstanding tasks stand imposing at the beginning of each day, challenging you to cram it all into a finite space of time. The time-blocking method does things the other way round. The idea is this: instead of giving yourself a number of hours to do a task, give every hour a few designated tasks. How to incorporate time-blocking into your to-do list This is time-blocking in a nutshell: Get yourself (or make yourself) a planner with all your hours in the day on it. In each space of an hour, write down the task, or tasks, that you want to accomplish in the time. For example, from 9am-10am set yourself the task of answering all of your emails. From 10am-12pm, aim to bash out at least three job applications. From 12pm-1pm, eat lunch to keep your energy up, yknow. Youll immediately see where you have unrealistic expectations of yourself. If youre not able to finish those job applications between 10am-12pm, give yourself a bit more time the following day by blocking out 10am-1pm instead. Theres a lot of situations where we think we can get something down in a set amount of time. Thats the planning fallacy talking. But remember everything takes longer than you think. The time-blocking method helps you visualise that. It also keeps you focused on the task at hand, as you dont start something and then leave it while you do something else. Instead, it forces you to think about what makes the most sense to do in each hour. The bravest organisers among us will use it to organise when to complete certain tasks at the best times. Morning person? Schedule all your tough stuff for before lunch? Cant think when youre hungry? Do all your menial stuff between 12-1. It really is the way forward. The first step out into the world of careers requires an organisational overhaul for most people. If you could be working more effectively, consider taking up time-blocking. It could make all the difference. Connect with Debut on Facebook and Twitter

Finding Your Place in the Green Economy
Finding Your Place in the Green Economy I bet many of you out there are wearing green today in honor of St. Patricks Day. I decided to do something different this year and blog green instead. Ive been a big fan of Carol McClellands Green Career Central site for over a year and I was thrilled to hear that she recently published a book on the topic of green careers called Green Careers for Dummies. She stopped by the Career Solvers blog to give readers the insider scoop on the green economy. You know you want to contribute to the evolving green economy. You may even know what skills, experience, and interests position you for this kind of work. The question is, do you know how to find a green position that meets your needs?Although the process of finding a position in the green economy is similar to finding a job in the traditional economy, there are some distinct differences that make the process a bit moreâ¦interesting, shall we say.1) The green economy is constantly evolving. Given that we are in the earliest phases of a new industrial revolution, we arenât completely sure what the economy will look like in the future. All signs point to a great deal of potential, but the specifics arenât laid out yet. The big picture is sketched out in broad brush strokes, but the specific details are out of focus2) To most people thereâs a fundamental question that is still unclear. What careers/companies/industries are green? Generally speaking, careers/companies/industries are green when they make a positive impact on the planet. The specific nature of the impact depends on the goal(s) they are striving to achieve, whether itâs reducing greenhouse gases, conserving energy, reducing waste, rethinking water usage, and/or restoring nature. When you look at this from a broad perspective, a wide number of industries are making concerted efforts to take greener, more sustainable actions. If you want a visual look at the array of industries, take a look at the Green Economy Map (www.greencareercentral.com/map) I created after writing Green Careers For Dummies.3) Occupation resources you are accustomed to using to understand a position are probably not available yet. The only way to figure out how your skills fit is to research your target industry and talk with those in the field to understand how the industry works and how your skills fit. Donât try to nail down an exact job title; thereâs no universally agreed up job functions yet. Instead look at what you are known for. Then ask yourself how your skills, knowledge, experience and training can help a green company/industry address the issues itâs facing.Youâll need to do some groundwork online and through conversations before youâll be able to articulate the role you are best suited to play. In the process your research on the industry and company will prepare you for your interviews with that company or its competitor.4) Thereâs no common wisdom of the best companies to work for. We donât yet know which companies will bec ome household names in this new economy. As a result, you donât know, off the top of your head, which companies will need someone with your skills or which companies are in your area. To develop your list of target companies, read industry specific blogs, notice which companies are listed as members on key professional associations, and pay attention to investment news to discover which start up companies and large, well known companies are active and growing in your target industry.5) Timing is everything. Different industries are developing at different rates. Some industries, such as solar and some areas of the smart grid sector, are reaching a point of maturity where companies are hiring people for all parts of the organization. Other industries are a bit earlier in their growth cycle. They may be in a research and development phase where most of their human resource budget is going toward the scientists and technical people who are creating the product the company will sell. As the company evolves, their hiring needs will change and they will look for people with a broader range of functions. If your target industry is not quite ready to hire people with your skills, donât despair. This turn of events gives you more time to develop your knowledge and skills to prepare you for your ultimate career. If you need a job now, be strategic in your job search to find a position that strengthens a part of your resume or allows you to build your credibility and network in a related arena.Remember, we are in the early stages of an economic shift. Any ground work you do now will prepare you to move into the green/clean/sustainable economy as it develops. To help you in your quest for a green career, start by identifying your green focus. Which part of the green economy are you most suited to work in? What areas of the green economy interest you most? Even if your next career move isnât going to be green, having a long term career target on the horizon can help y ou make strategic decisions so your next steps are in alignment with your future career.Want to be entered into our drawing to receive a free, autographed copy of Carols book? Use A Fuzzy Guide To Create A Resume
Use A Fuzzy Guide To Create A ResumeThe process of getting a resume into the hands of an employer can be one of the most difficult things for many job seekers. Many simply feel that any resume will do, so they don't bother to consider the process in full until after they have lost hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the process. There are many ways to use this information to your advantage and you can create an effective resume using just a few important pieces of information. First you need to know where to find the information, once you find it you need to create a resume using it. If you have not created a resume before then it's best to start by creating a cover letter. Your cover letter should really focus on what your personality is about, this will reflect the kind of person you are, and it will also serve as a reference if you ever have to interview. As you make changes and add more information to your resume you should make sure that you have a plan to update the job sear ch as often as possible. This will help you continue to improve your resume and it will also allow you to get the attention of the employer as quickly as possible. To help you with this you can create separate documents for each change, it's best to create two copies of each section for when you run out of one document. One easy way to change information is to just go back to a job you have previously worked at. In this case you may be able to use that information to your advantage. If this isn't an option then you may want to look for references that you may have previously interviewed with to see if you may be able to use them for information on your current company. Many people change companies often as they change jobs and the old job is either lost or the company is no longer a good fit. This can be a valuable addition to your resume, and you will want to make sure that the information you include is current. You can also use your resume as a reference and use the same informatio n on both resumes. If you have recently started working at a new company or if you have had a lot of work history with the same company then you may want to add details on the companies you have worked with before. These can include job titles, current positions, and numbers of years of experience. If you have these types of details you can get even more information from those resumes that have been using them. When you begin to see these pointers in your old resume you should take note of them and take action to add them to your new resume. Once you do that you can finally get that job and feel confident that it was the right decision for you.

Should You Consider A Career In Speech Therapy - Work It Daily
Should You Consider A Career In Speech Therapy - Work It Daily Should you consider a career in speech therapy? Speech therapy, referred to professionally as speech-language pathology, is an important discipline that helps people with speech problems communicate more effectively. A number of conditions, from emotional problems to birth defects, can cause a person to have difficulty speaking properly. Speech therapists are able to apply techniques to help them develop language skills and work around both physical and psychological obstacles. Jobs in speech pathology are relatively plentiful, and opportunities are expected to grow for qualified individuals. Should you consider a career in speech therapy? After you examine the duties, training and outlook of speech therapists, you'll have a much better idea if it's the right profession for you. Duties Of A Speech Therapist Speech-language pathologists are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of verbal communication disorders in children and adults. Problems with speaking may occur because of developmental disabilities, disease, psychological ailments, and several other medical conditions. After an initial evaluation and diagnosis, a speech therapist must then determine the most effective treatment options for the patient. An individualized treatment plan is then put together and implemented. Speech therapy treatment may consist of one or more of the following: Teaching patients to vocalize the proper sounds Teaching patients alternative forms of communication if speech rehabilitation is slow or impossible Teaching reading and writing skills Developing muscles used for voice communication Counseling patients and families In addition to diagnosis and treatment, speech-language pathologists must carry out administrative tasks, such as recordkeeping, scheduling and data organization. Speech therapists may also work closely with doctors, psychologists, and other therapists when serious conditions are involved. Training As A Speech Therapist Most entry-level jobs in speech therapy require a minimum of a masterâs degree. However, some positions may be open for those with bachelorâs degrees if supplemented with specific coursework or experience. Graduate programs in speech-language pathology include courses on age-specific language therapy, medical disorders that cause speech problems and the latest methods of treatment. Programs are accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and 253 programs around the country had been approved in 2010. This organization also allows individuals to earn the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology, which is required by many employers. While formal training is a mandatory requirement, the top speech therapists also possess several important qualities, including compassion, attention to detail, strong listening and speaking skills, and patience. Job Outlook For Speech Therapists According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment opportunities for speech therapists are expected to grow by 23 percent through 2020, which is much higher than the average rate for all jobs. Much of this is due to the increasing occurrence of medical conditions that cause speech problems, such as strokes and hearing impairment. Another reason is that the population is becoming increasingly aware of speech problems and beginning to realize that therapy is a viable option.
